FOR A STRONGER NONPROFIT SECTOR

Sector fluency for people who sell to nonprofits.
Your team knows your product. But do they understand the organizations they're selling to?
How to Speak Nonprofit helps sales teams understand how nonprofits actually work, think, decide, and buy - so they can have better conversations, build greater trust, and become better partners to the organizations they serve.
If you're ready to talk with us about how to implement this for your team, send us an email at

When sales teams don't understand the nonprofit buyer, the friction shows up fast:

Long sales cycles

Multiple layers of approval

Prospects who go quiet

Budget objections that don't quite make sense
Not all friction is an objection to overcome.
Sometimes what looks like resistance is actually information about funding, timing, approval structures, or organizational capacity.
What they say:
We don't have the budget
We need board/leadership approval
Call me after year-end
I like this, but . . .
What it may mean:
Funding constraints
Multiple stakeholders
Timing and capacity
I'm not the decision maker

Why Us?
How to Speak Nonprofit is built by people who know what it feels like to buy from the nonprofit side — and sell into it.

T. Clay Buck, MFA, CFRE
Clay has spent more than 30 years in the nonprofit sector, working from frontline development roles through Chief Development Officer leadership, then as a consultant, strategist and trainer.
He has been the nonprofit buyer evaluating products, services, platforms and partners. And he has been the consultant selling expertise into nonprofit organizations.
Today he's the Founder and Principal of Next River Fundraising Strategies and talks to nonprofits all day every day. He's made every mistake in the book, overcome most of them, and knows what nonprofits need today.
Erik Tomalis
Erik’s career spans front-line fundraising, major gifts, revenue leadership and nonprofit technology.
He has managed donor portfolios, campaigns and teams from inside nonprofit organizations, then moved into the vendor side of the sector, including work with Virtuous, before founding Keystone Philanthropy.
He knows the pressures of the nonprofit practitioner — and the realities of selling solutions to them.

Between us, we’ve been the buyer, the seller and the advisor - and a few roles in between.
We’ve sat through the demo.
We’ve given the demo.
We’ve scrutinized the budget.
We’ve defended the purchase.
We’ve chased the decision.
We’ve been the person who stopped returning the call because fifteen other things suddenly became more urgent.
We understand the pain on every side of the sale.
That perspective is the foundation of How to Speak Nonprofit. And we'd love to help you support the nonprofit sector better.
